Selection of model

 For my cover page, I decided on Shaony Lopez to be my model. She is the perfect example of a person who would fit the demographic of the kinds of people I am trying to represent in this magazine. She was also chosen because she has experience with hair and beauty. She frequently manages her natural curls and tends to her skincare routine to promote and encourage self health. Below is the cover picture of my model, Shaony Lopez.

Description of Interview

  I choose to interview my model, Shaony Lopez, about her experiences as a curly hair girl and her younger years. Through my variety of questions, she spoke in grave detail about how she felt lost as a young girl. The media only portrayed white women with straight year which negatively impacted her identity. In her terms, she did not know she had curly hair as a child. She was told by her peers that her hair was "nappy" and "unkempt" which has been proven to be false. As the interview progressed, she spoke of how her view of her hair has significantly changed. She is now capable of properly managing her hair and states how it took much "trial and error" to get the point she is at now. In better terms, she expresses how she loves her hair and would not change it for anything in the world.  1.A study at the University of Michigan shatters some myths. The results were announced today. Women have a reputation for gossiping and talking, yet the study found the reputation is undeserved. The study, which required researchers to observe a number of people at work, found that women work both longer and harder than men—that men spend more time goofing off on the job. The study found that the average employed man spends 52 minutes, or 11 percent of each working day, not working: in scheduled coffee breaks, unscheduled rest breaks, at lunch beyond the normal hour and so forth. The average working woman spends only 35 minutes, or 8 percent of her working day, in such scheduled and unscheduled rest breaks. The same study found that the amount of effort expended by women at work is 112 percent that of men. Draft Feature Story

  Growing up, the media constantly broadcasted straight hair white women as the beauty standard which was challenging to grapple with as a curly haired girl. Shaony Lopez was consumed by the world around her and the everlasting beauty standards that were filled with people who did not look like her. The lack of representation in the media caused her longing for straight hair to grow. “I used to want straight hair really bad because I never grew up seeing people with hair like mine.” All throughout elementary and middle school she did not know how to tend to her curly hair. Her curiosity surrounding how to style or moisturize her hair caused her to make many mistakes.
