"My magazine “Pretty & Healthy” directly challenges conventions by highlighting societal issues and pressures that many women of color feel when it comes to beauty standards. Many black women, specifically, feel as though they underrepresented in today’s society when it comes to natural hair and beauty standards. This has cause low self-esteem bullying and not knowing how to properly care for their hair. So, my magazine directly goes over how to care for natural hair, how to advocate for curly hair and how to be confident in your hair texture. This magazine is a way for self-discovery for women of color."

         For my magazine cover, there were a plethora of ideas I've considered for my cover. The ideas I've covered were descriptive and colorful, simple and direct, and bold themes. I choose them all for the simple fact that I believed that it would compliment the overall theme of my magazine. Final Feature Story

Growing up, the media constantly broadcasted straight hair white women as the beauty standard which was challenging to grapple with as a curly haired girl. Shaony Lopez was consumed by the world around her and the everlasting beauty standards that were filled with people who did not look like her. The lack of representation in the media caused her longing for straight hair to grow. “I used to want straight hair really bad because I never grew up seeing people with hair like mine.” All throughout elementary and middle school she did not know how to tend to her curly hair. Her curiosity surrounding how to style or moisturize her hair caused her to make many mistakes. She went through so much “trial and error” in her terms when learning how to deal with her hair texture. As a child, she did not know that her hair had potential to be healthy and vibrant.
